This bachelor’s thesis analyzes external security threats in the current operation of international air transport. The thesis first defines the legal framework for security and then categorizes the main risks arising from the operation of civil aircraft in areas of armed conflict. It further examines methods of aircraft identification in airspace, including primary and secondary radars and the ADS-B system. Consequently, it also analyzes factors leading to the misidentification of civil aircraft as military targets. This is followed by a detailed examination of military assets capable of threatening civil aviation, ranging from anti-aircraft missile systems, through jamming and spoofing of satellite navigation, to the threat posed by small unmanned aerial vehicles. Based on an analysis of four historical incidents (flights KAL 007, IR 655, MH 17, and PS 752), the thesis highlights the causes of the tragedies, human factor failures, and the impacts on aviation legislation. The concluding section presents available methods of both active and passive protection for aircraft and ground airport infrastructure.
