This thesis focuses on evaluating the machinability of 316L stainless steel manufactured by conventional technology and by the Meltio wire laser directed energy deposition process, both in the as built condition and after heat treatment. The aim of the thesis was to experimentally compare the behavior of individual materials during micro-milling and to assess their machinability based on force load, machined surface topography, and cutting tool wear. The experiment was conducted using a monolithic carbide micro-milling cutter with a diameter of 1 mm under defined cutting conditions. The results show that the different material states exhibit distinct machining responses, particularly in terms of force load, surface quality, and tool degradation. Conventionally manufactured 316L generally demonstrates a more stable cutting process and more uniform tool loading, whereas the additively manufactured material may show higher variability due to its heterogeneous microstructure and local density fluctuations. Heat treatment influences both material variants by altering their mechanical response during machining and affecting process stability as well as the resulting surface topography. Overall, the study confirms that the machinability of 316L stainless steel is strongly dependent on the manufacturing route and subsequent processing, highlighting the need to select appropriate cutting parameters with respect to the specific characteristics of each material state.
