This work deals with DEM analysis of a press for dewatering grass mulch. In the experimental part of the work, the design options of the grass material press are introduced and verified in order to achieve optimal dewatering and compression. The verification consists in simulating the process using the discrete element method (DEM). The simulation was carried out for four design solutions that were created by combining four design elements: a continuous screw, a screw with an inserted counter-rotating member, a lamellar filter cylinder and a perforated filter cylinder. To obtain adequate parameters for the simulation, a calibration of the grass mulch was performed. This was developed both directly using the measured parameters and indirectly using the Altair EDEM simulation tool. The values obtained from practical measurements were used to select a suitable contact model of the material. Subsequent simulations with calibrated parameters showed that the inclusion of a counter-rotating member in the screw does not improve the pressing parameters. In contrast, a simple perforated filter cylinder together with a continuous screw exerted high compression forces on the material.
