This diploma thesis deals with the urban design of a contemporary urban structure within the context of the historic city of Prostějov. The addressed area is located in the historical city centre, which was significantly affected during the 20th century by demolitions, changes in transport infrastructure, and the gradual loss of compact block development. The aim of the thesis is to propose a new urban structure that restores the continuity of the historical urban fabric, enhances permeability of the area, and creates high-quality public spaces supporting everyday urban life.
The thesis is based on analyses of broader spatial relationships, historical development, transport infrastructure, building structure, public spaces, and civic amenities of the city of Prostějov. Based on the identified problems and potentials of the area, an urban concept is proposed, founded on the principles of compact block development, mixed-use functions, support for pedestrian mobility, and the reduction of negative impacts caused by automobile traffic. The proposal also includes a new city market hall and a system of high-quality public and recreational spaces.
The proposed solution aims to create a vibrant, functionally diverse, and long-term sustainable urban district that respects the historical character of Prostějov while responding to contemporary requirements for sustainable urban development.
