The thesis focuses on flight demonstration of an AFC system as a replacement of ailerons on a small scale fixed wing UAV. The work begins with research into available options in AFC systems and the means of powering them. The strength and weaknesses of the systems and their power sources are compared in order to select an appropriate combination for the UAV. This combination was then optimized to fit the use on the selected platform that was modified to act as the demonstrator. The optimization process first included testing EDF properties. These results allowed some parameters to be set as constants. The rest of the parameters were investigated by two means. Firstly, 2D and 3D CFD simulations were made. After that, wind tunnel testing took place to verify and correct the CFD results. With knowledge of all the parameters values, a new wing that incorporates the AFC system was designed and manufactured by means of 3D printing. An Arduino based control system was developed to allow the aircraft to be controlled by a standard receiver. At last, flight testing was conducted, which showed that the aircraft behaved well and was fully controllable, proving the potential of AFC based control systems.
