Abstract:

This thesis examines the restoration of the castle in Velké Němčice and the enhancement of
its surroundings. The study area includes the historic castle building, the town square, and
the adjacent public spaces, which together form a significant part of the town center. The
aim of this thesis is to find a solution that will restore the castle’s dignified status within the
community while also creating conditions for its new everyday use.
The design is based on the conviction that the historic center should not merely be a place
of transit and occasional events, but above all a vibrant public space. The urban design
therefore features a more clearly organized layout of the square, a reduction in the
dominance of traffic, and the enhancement of public gathering areas. The design includes a
multipurpose amphitheater that can serve as a place for relaxation, gatherings, cultural
programs, and community celebrations.
The historically protected castle is conceived in the design as a publicly accessible town
center. The historic building houses the municipal office, a ceremonial hall, a café, a small
hall, and a wine cellar. The restoration of the building is based on respect for the preserved
structures and historical layers. Inappropriate modern interventions are being removed or
replaced with more refined solutions to enhance the building’s clarity and dignity.
A new extension complements the site’s functional capabilities while helping to spatially
enclose the square. It is designed as a lightweight prefabricated wooden structure serving
as a community library and study hall. Its appearance deliberately distinguishes it from the
historic building, yet it respects its scale and urban context. The result is a design that
integrates the restoration of a cultural monument, contemporary architecture, and public
space into a single functional whole
