This master’s thesis investigates helium and hydrogen permeation through sealing materials used in vacuum, pressure, and hydrogen systems. The theoretical section describes leak detection principles, the physical nature of permeation, and key differences between real leaks and permeation in polymers, elastomers, and metals. The experimental part focuses on designing a measuring apparatus and determining gas transport using a helium leak detector. Tested materials included PTFE samples (including metal-coated ones), carbon-based materials, EPDM, and metals. The study also evaluates the effect of thin metallic layers, prepared via vacuum evaporation, on reducing helium permeation. The measured results demonstrated that gas permeation is highly dependent on the material type, sample thickness, and surface treatment quality. For some coated samples, a clear decrease in helium transport was not observed, indicating that the mere presence of a metallic layer does not automatically guarantee improved barrier properties. Factors such as layer continuity, adhesion to the substrate, and potential defects formed during deposition likely play a significant role.

Student odprezentoval obsah své diplomové práce. Otázky oponenta byly zodpovězeny. V průběhu obhajoby byly položeny tyto doplňující otázky: Jak byly v práci uvažovány reálné netěsnosti a permeabilita? Detailnější vysvětlení nelineární závislosti leak ratu na tlaku a zdůvodnění tohoto jevu. Byla měřena závislost na teplotě a jaká reakce se očekává? Je průnik přes stěnu reálně utěsnitelný?
