This thesis focuses on the localized fabrication and optical characterization of SPE, spe cifically so-called B-centers, in thin layers of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). B-centers are optically active point defects of the crystal lattice, which arise as a result of irradiation of the material with a focused electron beam and are characterized by a narrow spectral zero phonon line at approximately 436nm. The procedure for preparing thin layers from hBN crystals and their subsequent treatment through a series of annealing steps is described. After irradiation, the optical characteristics of the defects were measured by confocal fluo rescence microscopy. Additional characterization methods were the Hanbury Brown–Twiss experiment for the function g(2)(τ) and cathodoluminescence measurement. The determinis tic creation of a B-center with a zero-phonon line at 440,7nm, shifted presumably due to lattice strain, was confirmed. Based on photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence measu rements, the proportionality of the optical intensity of the emitter to the applied electron dose was qualitatively described. The reliable fabrication method found represents an important foundation for future research of quantum emitters in hBN.
