This bachelor’s thesis investigates the physiological response and performance-limiting factors during high-intensity exercise, specifically stair climbing with an elevation of 18 floors. The research included 23 participants whose local muscle oxygenation (SmO2) on the m. vastus lateralis was continuously monitored in field race conditions using NIRS technology, alongside concurrent monitoring of cardiac activity using ECG. The measured data revealed that neither the degree of muscle desaturation nor the rate of subsequent tissue reoxygenation post-exercise directly correlates with the final race time. HRV analysis (RMSSD parameter) confirmed the expected post-race drop in parasympathetic activity; however, it was found that the heart rate recovery rate in the first minute (HRR60) also does not predict overall performance in this specific sports event, which can likely be attributed to the influence of metabolic acidosis. Thus, although traditional recovery parameters fail to reliably predict race time in this discipline, the combination of NIRS and ECG methods proved useful for diagnostic practice. The acquired muscle oxygenation data allow for the classification of the dominant type of performance limitation in individual athletes, and concurrent ECG measurement provides additional context regarding the overall load on the autonomic nervous system.
