Thesis focuses on the study of historical inorganic binders with emphasis on Roman cement, whose production requires lower firing temperatures than Portland cement, thus representing a potentially less energy-intensive and lower-emission alternative. The aim was to review the development of binder systems from antiquity to the present, to prepare a laboratory binder based on Roman cement using limestone washing sludge as an industrial by-product, and to experimentally determine its properties. The raw material was characterised by X-ray diffraction and found to consist predominantly of calcite (73 %), quartz (15 %), and clay minerals. By optimising the firing temperature to 1100 °C and enriching the mixture with ground limestone up to 20 wt. %, samples with a hydraulically active belite content of up to 40 % were prepared. The addition of gypsum (5–15 wt. %) regulated hydration kinetics and promoted ettringite formation, thereby improving mechanical properties. A compressive strength of 25.6 MPa was reached after 28 days. The hydration products of the prepared samples were characterised in terms of phase composition by XRD and TGA/DTA, and in terms of morphology and microstructure by SEM. The results demonstrate that limestone washing sludge is a promising raw material for the preparation of a belite-based binder with a lower carbon footprint, whose properties approach the lower boundary of the standardised strength class 32.5 MPa, and confirm the relevance of historical binder principles for the development of sustainable construction materials.
