Measuring Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is a key tool in modern cycling for accurately establishing training zones, tracking performance growth, and effectively managing the training process. Given the increasing availability of power meters and the variety of different testing protocols, this thesis is of fundamental importance for unifying and correctly interpreting the obtained data in training practice. This bachelor’s thesis focuses on comparing different methods for determining FTP. The aim of the study is to assess the mutual interchangeability of selected test protocols in training practice and to analyze the relationship between FTP and the second ventilatory threshold (VT2). The theoretical part explains the basics of exercise physiology to understand the concept of metabolic thresholds and defines the concept of FTP itself, its history, and its significance for training. In the practical part, data obtained from a 20-minute test, an 8-minute twice test, and a laboratory ramp test are analyzed and interpreted. The results show that while a strong correlation exists between the individual tests and VT2, their absolute values differ statistically significantly, meaning they are not mutually interchangeable. Thus, the thesis provides practical recommendations for cycling coaches and athletes when choosing test protocols and serves as a warning against comparing them directly.
