This bachelor's thesis focuses on the study of SiC/SiC composites intended for use in nuclear energy applications, particularly within the concept of Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF). The theoretical part summarizes current knowledge on the properties of SiC/SiC composites, their manufacturing methods, degradation mechanisms, and potential applications in various types of nuclear reactors. The experimental part is aimed at the characterization of a SiC/SiC composite produced by the company CTP (Ceramic Tubular Products) and at the comparison of the material properties in the initial and irradiated states after radiation exposure in the LVR-15 research reactor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to evaluate the microstructure and chemical composition, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to monitor changes in the crystal structure, and the Ring Compression Test (RCT) was used to assess the mechanical behavior. Optical measuring system was used to evaluate the dimensional changes of the SiC/SiC cladding tube after irradiation. The results indicate that irradiation led to shifts and broadening of diffraction peaks, changes in mechanical response, and dimensional changes of the cladding tube. Degradation of the interfaces between individual layers of the composite and increased brittleness after irradiation were observed. At the same time, it was found that despite a certain degree of degradation, the SiC/SiC composite retains its basic structural integrity. The thesis also contributed to the optimization of sample preparation and handling of irradiated SiC/SiC specimens under hot and semi-hot cell conditions.
