The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to prepare the project documentation for a building permit and for the execution of the construction for the conversion of the former municipal baths in Prostějov into a municipal library with a community centre, based on the architectural study developed within the course BGA036 – Interior Design Studio. The subject of the project is the adaptation of a valuable public building from the second half of the 20th century, characterized by significant architectural qualities, especially the generous space of the former swimming pool hall. The design responds to the need to relocate the entire existing municipal library, which is currently insufficient in terms of capacity and operation, into a single building where all departments can be concentrated. At the same time, the building is extended by a community centre function, providing spaces for clubs, educational activities, meetings of residents and other cultural and social uses. The main objective is to preserve and emphasize the architectural values of the original structure and to sensitively complement them with contemporary architectural elements that enable its adaptation to new functional requirements. The proposal emphasizes the preservation and new use of the dominant space of the former swimming pool hall, which becomes the main social and communal area of the library. The main entrance is oriented towards Floriánské Square, enabling active communication with the public space and contributing to its revitalization. The location of the building in the city centre, with connections to public transport, a cycle path and pedestrian routes, ensures good accessibility for the general public. An important part of the design is the revitalization of the adjacent garden on the rear side of the building, which is newly opened to the public in a regulated operating regime. The garden is conceived as a calm outdoor space for reading, relaxation and community activities and is supplemented with new greenery, outdoor furniture, a pavilion and elements supporting informal social interaction. Partial excavation of the terrain allows daylight to reach the underground spaces and creates stepped seating areas oriented towards the garden. The library is also connected to the garden through a covered terrace. The bachelor’s thesis also focuses on the urban context of the building and its relationship to the public space of Floriánské Square. The aim is to create a harmonious connection between architecture, public space and greenery, forming a contemporary cultural and community centre that is long-term functional, sustainable and beneficial for the inhabitants of the city.
