Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor's thesis is the design and architectural development of a community center with a small church in Brno. The design is based on a preliminary study from the studio BGA036 – Public Building Design Studio. The project is designed as a new permanent structure on a partially built-up plot. It is a civic amenity building with a multifunctional purpose, including a community center, a church, a cultural center, a café, emergency housing, and underground parking.
The new building is located in the northern part of Brno-Bystrc at Horní náměstí, near the Kamechy road. The site is situated in the center of a residential housing estate and slopes towards the east. An existing grocery store and the "Archa" Christian center are already located on the plot. The proposed building is situated in the south-eastern part of the site, in an area partially designated for greenery and further development.
The main concept of the site is the restoration of the "spirit of the place" (genius loci) and the creation of a full-fledged public space featuring public amenity buildings. Individual functional units such as the cultural center, community center, café, church, priest's apartment, and emergency housing are divided into separate volumes connected by a shared underground parking garage. In terms of massing, the individual units consist of shifted cubes and blocks made of exposed, colored, rammed concrete. The entire composition revolves around a central space a square and culminates in the space of the church.
The aim of the design is to divide the functional units into smaller objects, creating a new cultural hub for the housing estate and giving new significance to the Horní náměstí locality. Emphasis is placed on material purity and the authenticity of the basic materials used, complemented by an abundance of surrounding vegetation.
Regarding environmental impact, the design incorporates elements for ecological and economical solutions, such as a rainwater accumulation tank, additional greenery, and extensive green roofs to reduce ambient temperatures during hot days and enhance the comfort of the environment, as well as controlled ventilation with heat recovery (recuperation).
