Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor's thesis is the architectural design and project development of the reconversion of the former city spa in Prostějov into a modern city library. The design is based on a previous studio study and responds to the need to revitalize a historically valuable building with the aim of giving it a new, socially beneficial function. The building is designed as a center for education, culture and meetings of residents, while respecting the original urban context of Floriánské Square.
The building is located in the central part of the city on a specific plot defined by the existing historical buildings and the adjacent garden. The main architectural idea of the design is a sensitive dialogue between the original structure of the spa and new, modern interventions. The concept is based on the insertion of a new functional content, which requires open, airy and light-filled spaces. A distinctive motif is the work with light, which is solved using large-format circular skylights in the ceiling of the main hall, creating a unique atmosphere in the interior suitable for study and relaxation.
The layout solution is clear and fully barrier-free. The entrance floor (1st floor) hosts a café and a central hall for free selection of fiction. The basement spaces (1st floor) are transformed into a children's department with a direct connection to the newly renovated patio and garden, while the upper floors (2nd floor) are reserved for quiet study rooms, administrative facilities and multifunctional clubhouses for hobby activities. The aim was to create a smooth operation where the noisier zones (café, children's department) and quiet zones (study rooms, archives) do not interfere with each other.
The structural solution combines the existing brick and skeleton system with new elements. The key intervention is the implementation of a new reinforced concrete monolithic slab above the original swimming pool, which is coupled with the original structures and statically dimensioned for the installation of large-sized skylights. The material expression relies on honesty and contrast - the plaster and masonry are complemented by exposed concrete, wooden acoustic cladding in the interior and modern metalwork elements in anthracite.
In terms of environmental sustainability and energy management, the project integrates modern technologies to reduce operating costs. The design includes forced ventilation with heat recovery to ensure a stable microclimate for storing the book collection, the use of a heat pump as an energy source, and a rainwater management system. Rainwater is collected in an underground retention tank and then used to water the adjacent garden, with a safety overflow being solved by a seepage channel directly on the site.
