Polymeric hollow fibers heat exchangers offer an interesting alternative to conventional metal heat exchangers. However, due to the specific shape and size of the heat exchange surface, their design process remains largely experimental. There is a clear need to optimize the design parameters of such heat exchangers using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This work assesses the suitability of two CFD methods for the optimization process: the Finite Volume Method and the Lattice Boltzmann Method. The later is less commonly used and therefore part of this study is dedicated to description and discussion of its benefits and drawbacks. Subsequently, the parametric study using numerical simulations is carried out. The Pareto front concept is introduced and applied to identify parameter combinations that maximize heat transfer while minimizing pressure drop in the exchanger. An OpenFOAM numerical model is developed to simulate flow and heat transfer in an exchanger, with verification results presented. Experimental measurements of in-house-fabricated heat exchangers were performed and used to validate the numerical model.
