Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the restoration of a historic Functionalist villa and its adaptation into a multifunctional cultural and community center with public use. The urban design respects the existing structure of the surrounding area and does not interfere with broader urban relationships. All interventions are concentrated within the site of the building and are based on historical context as well as current operational requirements. The proposal includes the restoration of the original gravel access path in its historical alignment, the cultivation of the entrance area, and the revitalization of the garden. The garden is conceived as a publicly accessible space with terraces for outdoor exhibitions and cultural events, a natural biotope created through the transformation of the existing swimming pool, and the placement of a temporary community structure – a Jewish sukkah.

The architectural design emphasizes the preservation of the original expression, spatial logic, and values of the building while adapting it for public use. The layout is derived from the compact plan of the original two-family villa and is organized into three fully functional floors with clearly defined functions, enabling flexible use and barrier-free operation. New architectural interventions are designed as contemporary elements while drawing materially and chromatically from the context of the existing building. New entrances and openings respect the proportions and color scheme of the original joinery, and their design allows for a clear distinction between historical and new layers. A unifying element is the use of red color, referencing distinctive original interior features, particularly the flooring in the winter garden and on the terrace. The façade of the building is restored in a subtle beige tone corresponding to its historical appearance and the restrained aesthetics of Functionalist architecture. An integral part of the design is the discreet integration of an elevator, ensuring full barrier-free access without disturbing the historical structure of the building.

The bachelor’s thesis also includes the preparation of documentation for the building permit in the scope of a structural study, followed by detailed construction documentation. The work therefore addresses not only the architectural concept but also the technical, structural, and implementation aspects of the building’s restoration. An integral part of the thesis is the realization of a full-scale (1:1) architectural detail model, through which the technology of monolithic mosaic and pigmented concrete was tested.
