This master’s thesis deals with optimization using surrogate models in climate change-related applications. The aim of the thesis is to examine the behaviour of selected optimization algorithms on two different application tasks: environmental sensor placement and wind turbine layout optimization. The theoretical part describes expensive black-box optimization problems, the principle of surrogate modelling, selected types of surrogate models, acquisition functions, and the PyBADS, TuRBO, and PySOT algorithms. The practical part is based on the development of an experimental framework that enables unified execution, evaluation, and comparison of the algorithms on both tasks. Random Search was used as a reference method. The results showed that the benefit of surrogate models depends on the character of the solved problem.
Surrogate-based optimization, surrogate models, black-box optimization, Bayesian optimization, derivative-free optimization, Gaussian processes, radial basis functions, polynomial models, acquisition functions, wind turbine layout, layout optimization, wind wake effect, sensor placement, environmental monitoring, data-driven optimization, machine learning, computational modeling.
