Photosensitizers represent intensively researched materials for application in energy, medicine, and green synthesis. Bio-inspired organic materials find particular use in this area due to their expected biocompatibility, chemical tunability, and functional relevance derived from their roles in living systems. Flavins, derivatives of riboflavin (vitamin B2), belong to the category of promising next-generation photosensitizers. This master’s thesis, in its literature review, deals with the process of photosensitization, photosensitizers, and their applications. It further focuses on flavins and their use, among other roles, as photosensitizers. Their optical and redox properties are summarized, along with the relationship between structure and properties, and their applications. This thesis also discusses approaches to the preparation of flavin derivatives, their target precursors (1,2-diketones), and possible methods for their modification using conjugated systems with the aim of preparing a portfolio of condensed and non-condensed (hetero)aromatic 1,2-diketones. In the experimental part, a series of cross-coupling reactions of condensed and non-condensed aromatic molecules was carried out to form diarylacetylenes, which were subsequently oxidized to the target 1,2-diketones. Furthermore, complex derivatives based on a thiophene–aromatic motif–thiophene structure were prepared as precursors for the synthesis of new 1,2-diketones with an expected bathochromic shift in absorption and emission. The target compounds and their intermediates were purified and characterized.
