The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to prepare and characterize a humic complex with sulfathiazole and to assess its chemical and thermal stability. The thesis focuses on studying complexes formed between nonmethylated and methylated humic acids isolated from lignite and a representative sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfonamide antibiotics are considered environmental contaminants and raise legitimate concerns regarding their mobility in soil. The study was conducted using sorption and desorption processes simulating real-world conditions. In the study of stability, humic acids were characterized by elemental analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to better understand the interactions between them and the contaminant. Sorption and desorption experiments were conducted at various concentrations and evaluated using UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The sorption data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption capacity was evaluated along with the affinity for the adsorbent. The thermal stability of the resulting complexes was monitored by thermogravimetric analysis, which confirmed the formation of complexes through distinct thermal decomposition. A comparison of the data revealed that the methylated forms of humic acids exhibited a stronger bond with sulfathiazole, which was due to hydrophobic interactions between the thiazole ring and the aromatic structure of the humic acids.
