In recent years, there has been an increased interest in natural and handmade cosmetics (DIY – Do It Yourself, i.e. “do it yourself”) without added synthetic preservatives, as they enable individual customization and application to personal preferences and requirements. However, this trend is associated with increased demands for ensuring product safety, particularly from a microbiological perspective. This study therefore focuses on the evaluation of the microbiological stability of shower gels prepared without the use of preservatives. The study addresses factors influencing the microbial stability of cosmetic systems, sources of contamination, and the role of preservation. In the experimental part, model formulations of shower gels were prepared and their antimicrobial activity and stability were evaluated using a 28-day stress test. In unpreserved formulations, a rapid increase in microbial contamination was observed, accompanied by a deterioration of organoleptic properties within a short period. Although natural essential oils commonly used in DIY cosmetics exhibit limited antimicrobial activity, their preservative efficacy is insufficient for long-term product stability. In contrast, the use of synthetic preservatives resulted in a significant improvement in microbiological stability and product safety. The results confirm the limited stability of cosmetics without preservatives and highlight the importance of proper hygiene practices, appropriate formulation, and a limited shelf life of such products.
