Semester Project

FSI-GSPAcad. year: 2010/2011

Students are working out their diploma projects from the winter semester in 5th year of study. The course “Semester Project“ is intended to facilitate this process. It serves as an introductory and studying part of solving the problem; the problem is then solved in the courses “Final Project” and “Diploma Project”. Students familiarises themselves with the problem, establishes contacts with a workplace, for which he/she is going to solve the problem, and clarifies the objectives and areas of solution.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with basic rules applied in the introductory stage of a project solution. They will master the formulation of expected goals of the project, retrieving information and collection of needed documents and results of previous works, they will study and analyse the collected documents, and will be able to set the following steps necessary for solving of the whole project.

Prerequisites

Knowledge gained by the previous studies, mainly of production units designing, their simulation, ways of controlling and SW and HW equipment.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is conditional on the following: - participation in lessons, especially in check lessons, presentation of running results of own work, - presentation of results in a written form – app. 20 pages.

Aims

The aim of the course is for students to learn basic principles of solving within the introductory stage of the research target: clarification of the objectives, collecting all available documents and source materials, studying, analysing and evaluating of the documents and previous solutions, specifying further procedures for solving of the problem based on the above materials.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at check laboratory seminars is obligatory, only substantial reasons of absence are accepted and the state of project solution has to be checked in other agreed seminar.

Syllabus

1. Project specification – the contents, area of interest, scope of solution, variants, used methods, used literature, references, study material etc.
2. Study of collected materials.
3. Presentation of a written form of the results.
4. Proposing of a solution and methods to be used. Time schedule of solution process.
5-7. Individual solving of projects.
8. Running check of solutions through presentations of obtained results.
9-12. Individual solving of projects.
13. Closing the project, its delivery and evaluation.
