Surface Traffic Road

Content of subject is aimed at acquainting the students with basics of location survey, designing and maintaining the building of communications over land. Other part is aimed at basic questions of traffic engineering (road and city traffic). The last part of subject is aimed at rail transport (tube, tram), in connection with mass urban transportation, and its relation to other kinds of transport.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic output of subject study is done in option of orientation in wide area of this branch (road traffic), at the level of road networks construction, building and maintenance and also in the questions of road management.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Course curriculum

1. Role of transport in society - historical development, road bodies and kinds of traffic, basic technical and legal data for road communication design.
2. Basic terminology, classes of traffic volume, intensity of traffic, documentation of road constructions, administrative authorities.
3. Construction solutions of road communications and basic principles of common relations.
4. Categories of road communication; elements of width organization of road, extra lanes; lanes widening; view in horizontal curves; equipment and appliances of road communications; road objects.
5. Crossroad, distribution and types; extra lanes at crossroads, principles of capacity calculations and calculation of traffic signals; views at crossroads.
6. Technology of road communication and road bodies building.
7. Construction of carriage road and construction of formations, road materials and their testing, defects of road carriage and their diagnostic.
8. Local roads; traffic structures in city; mass urban transportation; static traffic, pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
9. Road and city traffic engineering; main tasks and job description; traffic survey and forecast of traffic, solving of traffic in regional relations; documentation.
10. Theory of traffic flow and basic characteristic; organization and regulation of traffic, effect of way guidance and equipment of road communications on driver´s psychology.
11. Traffic marking; traffic signs and their location; traffic signals, safety of traffic accident frequency; effect of traffic on environment.
12. Rail constructions and bodies; development of railways; vehicle and relation to rail; geometrical order of rails, tram traffic, mass urban transport of free-wheeled vehicles.
13. Design of railways with orientation on tram traffic; rail surface and bottom; sleeper bed; stations.

Aims

The main goal of subject is to gain basic knowledge in the field of design, building and management of communication and in the field of road traffic. Further, the students gain basic knowledge of traffic engineering. In the end of the subject other kinds of transport are broadly introduced especially information necessary for understanding their role in society.
