CADDS5 advanced modelling.

This course builds on knowledge and skills gained in the course CADDS5 3D modelling basics and focuses on furthering the routine use of CADDS5 for parametric 3D modelling. The course deals in detail with detailing and assembly. Other CADDS5 modules will be introduced briefly. Students will be confident in using the CADDS5 system. The course takes place in a classroom equipped with SGI INDY, DEC Alpha and PC workstations running Windows NT.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to use CADDS5 on their own for solving tasks in their respective fields (e.g. for a diplomma thesis). The second step in learning about ELECTRONIC PRODUCT DEFINITION will prepare them for the third and final course, CDM, which will complete their knowledge of the basics of the new type TPP.

Course curriculum

CADDS5 environment. LDM module. Basic terms.
Structure of the system, features, parametric modelling basics.
Construction planes, definitions, modification, use.
Levels, visibility of sketch elements and its control.
Geometric primitives and Boolean operations with 3D objects.
Profiles, applications of sketcher. Creation of 3D objects from 2D profiles.
Advanced 3D editing tools, parametrisation.
Advanced editing of 3D models.
Parameters, variables, equations, solver - description and use.
Conversion of a parametric model into explicit. Basic terms (JCF, CVNC, simulator, CL data), environment setting, JCF management.
Preparation of semi-finished product. Tool management, setting up a tool library. Tool replacement. Coordinates seting. Machine adjustment.
Plane adjustment (working, feed, take out, reference, safety). Setting the speed of feed, tool insert, joining. JCF command-line editor.
Allowance setting, setting of initial position of the tool. Setting of tool trajectory display. Output setting. Simulation.

Aims

Until now, the main problem in implementing CAD/CAM/CAE technologies has been the focus on solving one concrete issue. Customer who wanted to speed up the Technological Preparation of Production selected a CAD system to suit these specific needs. The system must be able to support individual tasks but the real benefits (including a financial one) can be achieved only when a complete solution is applied which interconnects all processes into one logical whole. The method is called Electronic Product Definition (EPD). A traditional CAD system becomes a part of this solution. EPD makes it possible to logically link all the individual applications. We teach large CAD systems in the context of EPD from the Sketcher to CAM manufacture. The course's aim is to teach students the basics of this method. The basic modules - which constitute the backbone of EPD - are as follows: SKETCHER - serves for easy 2D sketching that can be transferred to a parametric modeller. PARAMETRIC MODELLER - for solid model creation. ASSEMBLY - models are put together into assemblies in this environment. It also makes it possible to make additional changes in individual models. The EXPLICIT environment serves for creation of basic technical documentation of the models. The MANUFACTURE module compiles a binary code for each model which can be compiled into NC-code and control NC machines. The production process can be first simulated in an NC verifier. In the past, it was to make a real working model for testing. ANALYSIS MODULES simulate various features, making this unnecessary and saving costs and time. The courses present large CAD as a complete set of tools for literally materialising an idea.
