Course detail

Cell and Tissue Engineering

FEKT-MPAN-TBIAcad. year: 2027/2028

The course “Cell and Tissie Engineering” provides an overview of the principles, methods, technologies, and instrumentation used in the field of cellular and tissue engineering, particularly in laboratory and research settings and in the context of regenerative medicine. The course focuses on the fundamental principles underlying the design, fabrication, and evaluation of systems for controlling cellular behavior and developing functional tissue structures.

The course covers biomaterials used in cellular and tissue engineering, their properties, interactions with cells, and methods for their characterization. It further addresses the principles of tissue scaffold design and fabrication, cell culture techniques, and the use of bioreactors. Particular attention is given to stem cells, cellular differentiation, and mechanotransduction, as well as their role in regulating tissue regeneration and formation.

A dedicated part of the course focuses on strategies for the engineering of selected tissues, including vascular, skin, bone, and cartilage tissues, as well as on the use of advanced culture systems, including organ-on-a-chip technologies. The course also introduces advanced methods for the characterization of biomaterials, cells, and cell–material interactions.

The final part of the course addresses the translation of cellular and tissue engineering approaches into clinical practice, including fundamental principles of safety and efficacy assessment, regulatory requirements, and ethical aspects related to the development and application of engineered tissues.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The final course grade will be determined based on the points obtained from the credit test (maximum of 10 points) and the final oral examination (maximum of 90 points).

To obtain the course credit, students must meet the following requirements:

  • 100% attendance in practical classes
  • successful completion of the credit test

Only students who have been awarded the course credit are eligible to take the final examination.

Detailed requirements for the successful completion of the course are specified in the annually updated directive issued by the course coordinator.
