Professional English

An English course at intermediate level designed to meet the practical language requirements of students who need to communicate in English at work in the area of management and information technology.

If plagiarism or any unauthorized collaboration on assigments intended for individual work (weekly assignments, mid-term test, credit test, final presentation) is discovered, the student will not be given a grade with the possibility of disciplinary action.

Attendance is compulsory and is monitored.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of English at intermediale level. The course builds on knowledge acquired in the elementary general course English 1. 

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Course completion

Credit:

Students will be awarded the credit upon collecting at least 50 points out of the total 100, as follows:

75% compulsory attendance in seminars - 5 points

Weekly e-learning assignments - max. 10 points

Optional mid-term test - max. 20 points

Final credit test - max. 65 points

 

Exam: Only students who have been awarded the credit are allowed to sit the exam.

Students will be asked to give an oral presentation on a selected topic of their own choice (based on the course reading). All topics need to be approved by the lecturer no later than Credit week). Assessment of the presentation reflects the use of correct grammar (max. 35 points), relevant terminology (max. 35 points) and the coherence and fluency of the speech (max. 30 points). The final mark is awarded based on the total number of collected points in line with the ECTS grading scale as follows: 100-90 (A), 89-80 (B), 79-70 (C), 69-60 (D), 59-50 (E), 49-0 (F).


The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

Development of all language skills, consolidation and deepening of knowledge of grammatical structures, and increase in vocabulary with special emphasis on language needed at work in the area of business and management, IT, academic language, knowledge of general English at CEF B1 level.

Students will acquire the basic terminology and language skills necessary for communication in various situations in business and management, especially regarding company organization , production process, trading, presentations and financial matters. They will be made familiar with the terminology necessary for work in IT and with professional academic and IT materials.

Knowledge 

  1. Understands specialized terminology used in the fields of information technology and management.

  2. Has knowledge of the basic principles of English business correspondence (email etiquette, letter structure, formal vs. informal style).

  3. Is familiar with common language structures used in professional communication (e.g., passive voice, conditional sentences, modal verbs for suggestions and recommendations).

  4. Understands cultural differences in international business communication and their impact on language use.

Skills

  1. Can write structured and grammatically correct emails, reports, offers, or project summaries in English.
  2. Is able to participate effectively in meetings, presentations, or team discussions in English (using appropriate phrases for suggesting, agreeing/disagreeing, asking questions, etc.).

  3. Understands spoken English in professional contexts – such as presentations, meetings, instructional videos, or software tutorials.

  4. Can read and comprehend technical and professional texts in English (e.g., documentation, articles, business plans) and summarize their content.

Competences 

  1. Can communicate independently in English in real work-related situations (e.g., correspondence with foreign clients, project presentations, solving issues with an IT team).

  2. Is able to integrate language knowledge with ICT expertise – e.g., when creating user manuals, project documentation, or presentations.

  3. Can reflect on their own language skills and continuously improve based on feedback.

  4. Is capable of adapting language according to the audience (formal vs. informal style, technical vs. managerial language).
