European and World Economy

The course focuses on the characteristics and development tendencies of the contemporary world economy with emphasis on the position of the European Union within the world economy. The course includes the definition of the subjects of the world economy, forms of relations, the division of the world economy into trading blocks, the history of European integration and the current position of the EU in the world economy and its competitiveness, the position of the Czech Republic in the globalized economy, the causes and consequences of the divergence of developing countries.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of macroeconomics and an overview of the current economic situation is prerequisite.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credit is awarded on the basis of the preparation of a seminar paper on the assigned topic. The exam is written.

Participation in lectures is optional.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the main trends in the development of the contemporary European and world economy with an emphasis on understanding the interrelationships and impacts on the subjects of the world economy.
Students will gain a comprehensive knowledge of the European and world economy and be able to critically evaluate contemporary economic phenomena. Graduates of the course will have a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the contemporary world economy.

Syllabus

  1. Structure and development of the world economy (subjects of the world economy - national economies, international corporations, international organizations).
  2. Structure of the world economy (forms of economic relations).
  3. Development of the world economy.
  4. Characteristics of the contemporary world economy (integration, globalisation, regionalism, differentiation).
  5. Trade blocks (European macro-region).
  6. Trade blocks (North American, Asia-Pacific macro-region).
  7. European Union (history of European integration, integration of the Czech economy into the EU).
  8. European Union (EU institutions, institutions, policies).
  9. Monetary union, EU competitiveness.
  10. International institutions with activities in the field of international economic relations (UN, IMF, World Bank, OECD, OPEC).
  11. Monetary systems.
  12. The position of the Czech Republic in the globalised economy (membership of the Czech Republic in international organisations, interests of the nation state in the globalised economy).
  13. The position of developing countries in the contemporary economy (causes of divergence, measurement of countries' maturity).

Learning Outcomes:

Expertise: The graduate of the course: will have knowledge of the development of European integration and the integration of the Czech economy into the EU. The graduate will have an overview of international institutions with activities in the field of international economic relations, such as the UN, IMF, World Bank, OECD and OPEC. The graduate will also be familiar with different monetary systems and the position of the Czech Republic in the globalised economy, including the Czech Republic's membership of international organisations and the interests of the nation state in the globalised economy. The student will understand the position of developing countries in the contemporary economy, including the causes of divergence and the measurement of countries' maturity.

Professional Skills: The graduate of the course: will be able to analyse the structure and development of the world economy. The student will be able to apply knowledge of the forms of economic relations and the development of the world economy to specific economic scenarios. The graduate will also be able to analyse the characteristics of the contemporary world economy.

General competences: The graduate of the course: develops the ability to work with quantitative and qualitative data in the field of international economic relations, to interpret information related to the world economy and to apply the knowledge gained in practical economic scenarios and case studies.
