French for Beginners (VYF001) or completion of any French course at the VYF001 level.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course concludes with a credit. Credit is awarded based on the following conditions:

  1. attendance and active class participation

  2. a midterm test

  3. a credit test during credit week

Aims

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
Grammar & Language Knowledge

  • Correctly conjugate Group 2 verbs (e.g., finir), irregular verbs acheter, payer, prendre, boire, and the versatile verb faire.
  • Use partitive articles (du, de la, de l', des) to express unspecified quantities of food and drink.
  • Form and practically apply the imperative mood to give directions and instructions.
  • Use adverbs of frequency (toujours, parfois, jamais) to express the regularity and repetition of actions.

Communication & Practical Skills

  • Shop in stores, order food and drinks in restaurants or cafés, ask for prices, and handle payments.
  • Describe their daily diet, eating habits, and food preferences.
  • Ask for directions, understand navigation in an unfamiliar setting, and describe their city or village, including available services and transport.
  • Talk about sports, leisure activities, and the weather using the verb faire.
  • Respond effectively in everyday situations related to shopping, travel, and dining within the scope of Units 3 and 4.

  • Week 3: The verbs acheter, payer, prendre, boire

  • Week 4: The partitive article; I eat / I drink / I'll have...

  • Week 5: Going shopping, asking for the price

  • Week 6: Second-group verbs (finir); ordering in a restaurant

  • Week 7: My daily menu / what I eat in a day

  • Week 8: The verb to do/make (faire) and its uses (activities, hobbies, weather)

  • Week 9: The city, places in the city, my city; il y a (there is/are)

  • Week 10: Means of transport; the imperative mood; asking for directions

  • Week 11: How often? Never, sometimes, always/all the time

  • Week 12: Talking about my town/village

  • Week 13: Review of Units 3 and 4; credit test (final test)
