This pre-intermediate Italian course focuses on expanding past tenses, developing practical communication skills, and handling everyday travel situations.
Grammar

  • Past tenses: passato prossimo of reflexive verbs, introduction to imperfetto (formation, habits, descriptions), and distinguishing between and combining them in storytelling
  • Pronouns: indirect object pronouns and the pronoun NE
  • Verb structures and constructions: the verbs STARE and DARE, expressing ongoing actions (stare + gerund)
  • Other structures: ordinal numbers, expressing frequency, prepositions of place

Vocabulary and Topics

  • Personal profile and appearance: detailed self-introduction, describing physical appearance
  • Travel and services: booking a hotel room, navigating and handling situations at the train station
  • Shopping and fashion: clothing, colors, gift ideas
  • Leisure and culture: reading, books, hobbies, and expressing the frequency of activities
  • Weather: describing weather and climate conditions

Communication Skills

  • Fluently narrating past events and personal experiences
  • Handling common tourist and practical situations (hotel, transportation)
  • Formulating, accepting, and declining proposals or invitations
  • Describing ongoing actions and activities

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course concludes with a credit. Credit is awarded based on the following conditions:

  1. attendance and active class participation

  2. a midterm test

  3. a credit test during credit week

Aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Narrate past events: Coherently describe personal experiences, past events, and habits using the correct combination of passato prossimo and imperfetto.
  • Handle travel situations: Independently book a hotel room, purchase a ticket, and manage common situations at the train station.
  • Make and respond to proposals: Formulate invitations, accept offers, and politely decline suggestions.
  • Describe people and clothing: Describe physical appearance in detail, characterize clothing (colors, styles), and suggest gift ideas.
  • Describe ongoing actions: Express what is happening at the moment using the stare + gerundio construction.
  • Discuss hobbies and the weather: Hold conversations on topics such as reading, books, leisure activities, and weather conditions.
  • Use advanced grammar structures: Correctly apply indirect object pronouns, the pronoun NE, ordinal numbers, and prepositions of place in communication.
