Methodology of Science and Research Work in Economics and Management

Course contents:
• Research in economics and management - research process, research project design. Research timing, pitfalls and research critical points. Determination of the state of scientific knowledge, full-text scientific database. Sources and data collection and processing in secondary research.
• Methods and approaches of quantitative research - sample determination, research questions and hypotheses determination, pre-research investigations, advanced quantitative data processing using SW tools.
• Methods and approaches of qualitative research - selection of methods, data capture, data processing (transcription techniques, data coding), interpretation and analysis of outputs using SW tools.
The student will understand the basic principles of scientific work. They will be able to elaborate a research project for successful elaboration of a dissertation in the field of economics and management. He will also be able to process his research results into a scientific article for publishing at national and international level.

Entry knowledge

The student must demonstrate an ability for analytical thinking. Furthermore, the student must be capable of working with various types of data using software tools.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

To successfully complete the course, students must:
1. Prepare a written term paper (research project) (30 points).
2. Complete the e-learning course on publishing offered by the BUT Library (20 points).
3. Complete the "Fundamentals of Scientific Work" course at the Czech Academy of Sciences (20 points).
4. Pass the course examination, which is conducted individually and orally (30 points).
Total: 100 points.
To successfully complete the course, students must complete all four assessment components and obtain a minimum of 75 out of the 100 possible points.

Students are required to attend the e-learning course on publishing and the course at the Czech Academy of Sciences. In the event of absence from class, students must discuss the missed topic with the professor.

Aims

The primary objective of the course is to teach students how to conduct scientific work, deepen their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in this field, and thereby prepare them to produce a high-quality dissertation. Specific objectives include establishing the current state of scientific knowledge and correctly applying various research methods—covering both quantitative and qualitative data analysis—as well as teaching students how to prepare scientific articles for national and international journals.
Upon completion of the course, students will be capable of conducting both secondary and primary research applicable to their final dissertation.

1. Introduction to the course, definition of study requirements, and course completion criteria.

2. Research topic, conceptualizing the topic, and scheduling the research process. Defining research objectives.

3. Literature review, application of the PRISMA method, and identification of the research gap and research questions.

4. Types of data, secondary data, and their use in research.

5. Quantitative approach, sample selection, and processing and interpretation of results.

6. Qualitative approach, data coding, data processing, and interpretation of results.

7. Common errors in the research process.

8. Preparation of a scientific article.
