English in Sport Tech

CESA-SESTAcad. year: 2026/2027

This course develops students' English language proficiency at a general level while introducing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) relevant to Sport Technology. The course adopts a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach within a blended, student-centred learning environment that promotes active participation, collaboration, and independent learning.

Students work in teams to investigate and solve authentic, open-ended problems related to sport technology and their field of study as well as more general university topics. Throughout the course, they develop their communication skills alongside essential academic and professional competencies, including critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, project management, and self-directed learning.

The course includes the following stages:

  • forming project teams and selecting a project topic;
  • designing the project theme and preparing a project proposal;
  • planning and carrying out project tasks;
  • documenting project outcomes in a written report;
  • presenting and defending the final project solution.

While every project culminates in a tangible end product, the emphasis of Project-Based Learning is on the learning process. Students are expected to engage in research, decision-making, collaboration, reflection, and effective communication as they progress through the project. Consequently, project planning focuses not only on the final product but also on the sequence of learning activities that enable students to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Aims

The course builds upon the English language skills students have acquired in secondary school and further develops them in the context of academic study and professional communication. Its primary aim is to enhance students' competence in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) related to Sport Technology, targeting B2-level proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The course is delivered through a blended, student-centred learning environment with a strong emphasis on Project-Based Learning (PBL). Students work collaboratively over an extended period to investigate and solve authentic, open-ended problems related to sport technology and their field of study. This approach promotes the development of English language proficiency alongside essential academic and professional competencies, including critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, project management, digital literacy, and self-directed learning.

Students consolidate and extend intermediate-level grammar and general English vocabulary relevant to academic and professional contexts while developing the specialised terminology and communication skills required in sport technology. Particular emphasis is placed on academic discussion, teamwork, presentation skills, and the preparation of written project documentation.
