Bachelor Seminar (S-TZB/VEV)

This course is designed to provide methodological and technical support to students as they independently prepare their bachelor’s thesis in the field of building services engineering. The seminar develops students’ ability to work with technical literature, analyze technical problems, and apply theoretical knowledge in the design of specific heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and related issues.

Entry knowledge

  • Thermodynamics and Hydromechanics: Fundamental physical principles of heat transfer, fluid flow, and airflow.
  • Heating and Ventilation: Calculations of heat losses, heat gains, and the sizing of duct systems.
  • Building Physics: Knowledge of the thermal properties of building structures.
  • Ability to analyze architectural and structural solutions for buildings.
    Advanced knowledge of software for creating project documentation.
  • Familiarity with basic Czech and European technical standards (ČSN, EN) and the Building Code.
  • Ability to independently search for technical information and scientific articles, and the basic ability to defend a technical solution and create a clear presentation.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The following criteria are evaluated for the completion of the course:

  • Regular attendance at seminars (generally at least 80%).
  • Presentation of the current status of the thesis.
  • Regular consultations with the bachelor’s thesis supervisor.
  • Submission of the final draft of the thesis by the deadline specified in the schedule.

Aims

Professional Knowledge

The student applies theoretical knowledge to solve a specific assignment with various options and is able to argue for and defend the solution from technical, operational, energy, and environmental perspectives.

Professional Skills

Formulating the objectives and methodology of a bachelor’s thesis. Effectively searching for and citing relevant professional sources and standards. Preparing technical documentation and the text portion of the thesis in accordance with faculty standards.

Professional Competencies

Presenting and defending chosen technical solutions before a group.

Syllabus

  1. Formal requirements for the final deliverable, legislation, selection of detailed specifications, and coordination with the thesis advisor.
  2. Analysis of the building’s architectural and structural design, review of critical structural details, and assessment of their relationship to the proposed system (heating or ventilation).
  3. Evaluation of structures and determination of the building’s base load (calculation of heat losses for heating, or calculation of heat gains and required air flow rates for ventilation).
  4. Selection of the system concept (heat sources, heating system, ventilation concept, and air-handling units).
  5. Design of specific components (selection of heating surfaces and valves for heating, or selection of distribution elements and terminal units for ventilation).
  6. Presentation of the building concept, basic load calculations, and conceptual overview of the selected system (heating or ventilation schematics).
  7. Design of piping networks.
  8. Coordination of routes with the structural design, resolution of penetrations and space requirements (design of a technical room for heating, or design of a mechanical room and sound insulation for ventilation).
  9. Basic design of the measurement and control system, operational diagram, and preliminary technical-economic evaluation of the selected solution (heating or ventilation).
  10. Principles for drawing building services engineering drawings (floor plans, functional diagrams, cross-sections for heating or ventilation), compilation of a written report, and citation ethics.
  11. Complete presentation of the final technical solution (heating or ventilation), discussion of shortcomings in the documentation and drawings.
  12. Preparing arguments for the presentation, rhetoric, and the formal conclusion of the seminar.
