Utility Networks

FAST-NPB024Acad. year: 2026/2027

The course focuses on utility networks, particularly underground utility infrastructure. The general part covers basic terminology, classification and categories of utility networks and their historical development. Attention is paid to relevant standards and regulations, spatial coordination of utility networks, and the design of shared utility corridors. The course also covers the basic principles of designing pipeline networks, including water supply, sewerage, district heating, steam and gas networks, as well as electrical power, telecommunication and data networks. From the construction perspective, students are introduced to pipe materials and basic methods of construction and rehabilitation of utility networks, particularly those installed underground.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Conditions for Awarding the Course Credit

The conditions for awarding the course credit are:

  • compulsory attendance at practical classes,
  • submission of all required assignments,
  • correct completion of all required assignments; any deficiencies must be corrected in accordance with the instructor’s instructions,
  • successful completion of the mid-term test,
  • successful completion of the final test.

One duly excused absence from practical classes may be approved by the instructor. Two or more absences are assessed and may be excused by the course guarantor. In justified cases, the course guarantor may specify an alternative way of fulfilling the attendance requirement.

Assessment of Tests

To fulfil the course credit requirements, more than 50% of the maximum available points must be achieved in both the mid-term test and the final test.

The results of the two tests are assessed separately. Meeting the required threshold in one test does not compensate for failing to meet the required threshold in the other test.

Awarding the Course Credit

The course credit is awarded after all specified requirements have been fulfilled, including the attendance requirement, submission and correct completion of all required assignments, and successful completion of both the mid-term and final tests.

If any of the above requirements is not fulfilled, the course credit is not awarded.

Aims

Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire the knowledge, skills and competences required to understand utility networks, their spatial arrangement, design, construction, operation and rehabilitation.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

  • know the basic terminology, classification, functions and characteristics of individual types of utility networks,
  • know the basic principles of the arrangement and design of pipeline and cable networks,
  • understand the principles of spatial arrangement, coordination and shared utility corridors,
  • be familiar with basic technical, regulatory and legislative requirements related to utility networks,
  • know the basic materials, structural solutions and technologies used for the construction, operation and rehabilitation of utility networks.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • distinguish between individual types of utility networks and identify their basic components,
  • read and interpret basic technical documentation for utility networks,
  • propose a basic spatial arrangement of utility networks and assess their mutual spatial relationships and potential conflicts,
  • apply basic technical and regulatory requirements when addressing utility network issues,
  • assess the suitability of basic material, structural and technological solutions,
  • solve basic technical tasks related to the design, construction, operation and rehabilitation of utility networks.

Competences

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • work independently with professional sources and navigate issues related to utility networks,
  • assess technical and spatial relationships between different types of utility networks,
  • propose and professionally justify solutions to basic tasks related to the spatial arrangement, construction, operation and rehabilitation of utility networks,
  • apply acquired knowledge and skills when solving technical tasks and preparing technical documentation,
  • communicate professionally about utility networks using appropriate technical terminology.
