Selected Chapters from Water Supply

The course provides students with an in-depth insight into the advanced aspects of operating water supply systems and builds upon the prerequisite "Water Supply" course. The subject matter is addressed progressively, ranging from the primary protection of water resources to the detailed evaluation of the technical condition and reliability of distribution networks. The curriculum systematically covers current topics such as micropollutants, the hydraulic modeling of water supply networks, and the comprehensive management of water losses. Throughout their studies, students will familiarize themselves with modern technical equipment used for detecting hidden water leaks, pipeline cleaning procedures, and the specific issues concerning drinking water temperature within the distribution network. The instruction bridges the gap to real-world engineering practice by providing an overview of conducting technical audits and risk assessments for public water supply systems. A portion of the course is also dedicated to a specialized field trip and attendance at a professional water management conference.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Students are required to actively participate in the practical classes and submit all assignments on time, correctly completed, and in the prescribed format and level of detail, for which points are awarded by the instructor. To obtain course credit, it is necessary to achieve more than 50 percent of the points. A maximum of two absences in the practical classes is permitted. To successfully pass the examination and complete the course, students must pass a computer-based knowledge test and a subsequent oral examination.

Aims

The main objective of the course is to deepen and expand the students' professional knowledge, skills, and competences acquired in the basic "Water Supply" course and to prepare them for solving complex engineering and operational tasks in the field of drinking water supply, with an emphasis on modern technologies and real-world practice. Upon completion of the course, the student will acquire:

Professional Knowledge

  • Theory and Principles: In-depth knowledge of the primary protection of water resources and an understanding of the occurrence and removal of micropollutants using progressive water treatment technologies.
  • Network Operation and Reliability: Comprehension of advanced principles regarding distribution network operations and a detailed understanding of water loss management. Mastery of the theoretical foundations for evaluating the technical condition and reliability of water supply systems.
  • Distribution Specifics: Knowledge of modern procedures for water pipeline cleaning and an understanding of water temperature dynamics within the network, including the impact of temperature on drinking water quality. Comprehension of the functions of special fittings (e.g., control valves).

  • Analysis and Modeling: The ability to apply hydraulic modeling methods to analyze and optimize water supply networks.
  • Practical Application: The ability to design and evaluate processes associated with the detection of hidden water leaks using modern technical equipment.
  • Evaluation and Audits: The capability to develop plans for minimizing water losses and to conduct risk assessments for public water supply systems, along with the ability to navigate the complexities of technical audits.
