Microsoft Windows Desktop Systems

  • Introduction to administering Windows 11,
  • introduction to network technologies TCP/IP, IP addresses,
  • introduction to DNS, NetBIOS and DHCP services.
  • Administration of Windows: user accounts, file systems, user rights vs. permissions, shared resources and printing, user environment (profiles, Group Policy), disk quotas, hardware and device drivers, troubleshooting system issues and backup, software installation,
  • remote administration and Remote Desktop,
  • system security (passwords, EFS, domains, Windows Firewall), auditing, security policies and templates,
  • installation: unattended installation from media or network, update integration, introduction to Windows Deployment Services, Windows Update,
  • administration tasks scripting.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Computer labs are graded per module, 20 points in total:

  • Module 1 (labs 1 and 2) – 7 points,
  • Module 2 (labs 3 and 4) – 7 points,
  • Module 3 (labs 5 and 6) – 6 points.

Points are awarded for completing the lab tasks. Attendance in any form of education is optional; if a lab is missed, the tasks can be completed independently and a PDF report (description of the procedure and screenshots) sent to the lecturer.

The credit (zápočet) is awarded for at least 10 points (out of 20) from the computer labs and is a prerequisite for admission to the final exam.

The final exam is worth 80 points in total and consists of a practical part (30 points), a written part (25 points) and an oral part (25 points).

A total of 100 points can be obtained in the course (20 points from the labs and 80 points from the final exam).

Aims

To obtain strong knowledge about administering, implementing and designing Microsoft Windows desktop systems and network technologies based on the technologies. The course will provide students with hands-on practice in the lab environment. The course loosely follows the client part of the Microsoft MD-102 Endpoint Administrator certification.

 

Ability to implement, manage, maintain and support Microsoft Windows desktop systems as well as troubleshoot common issues. General insight into problems of computer networks and their implementation.

  1. Introduction.
  2. Installation, update, migration.
  3. System image creation, configuration passes, virtual hard disks.
  4. System image, driver and package management and deployment, Windows Autopilot and Intune.
  5. Network configuration, IPv4, IPv6, routing, management tools, wireless networks, printers.
  6. Windows Firewall, Remote Desktop and remote management.
  7. Resource sharing and security, offline files, NTFS, EFS, BitLocker.
  8. User Account Control (UAC).
  9. Device, disk, driver and power management.
  10. Monitoring and performance – Windows Security, Task Manager, services, Event Viewer, Performance Monitor.
  11. Backup and data recovery, shadow copies, previous versions, system image, Windows Recovery Environment.
  12. Application compatibility, virtualization with Hyper-V, VPN.
  13. Windows Update, WSUS and Windows Autopatch, Microsoft Edge.

  2. System images – Windows ADK, Windows PE, WIM editing with DISM, Sysprep and image deployment.
  3. Windows networking, Windows Firewall, IP addressing, remote management.
  4. Resource sharing and security, offline files, NTFS, EFS.
  5. UAC, software restriction policies and AppLocker; disk management – dynamic disks, RAID volumes, Storage Spaces.
  6. Performance Monitor, Event Viewer and event forwarding, File History, backup, error reporting.
