Sewerage Systems – town drainage

The course provides an in-depth study of urban drainage, with a focus on hydrological and hydraulic processes and on the design, assessment and management of sewer systems. Attention is given to the determination of design hydrological and hydraulic parameters, the conveyance of stormwater and wastewater, sewer materials and structural solutions, and technologies used for the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of sewer networks.

The course also covers the reliability, operation and management of sewer systems, the application of hydroinformatics tools, and relevant technical standards and legislation.

Emphasis is placed on the integrated assessment of urban drainage systems, independent solution of professional problems, and the application of acquired knowledge to the planning, design, operation, rehabilitation and management of sewer systems. The course also develops the ability to critically evaluate professional and scientific sources, formulate and address research questions, and apply appropriate analytical, computational and modelling approaches in research related to urban drainage and water management.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of hydraulics, hydrology, sewerage and utility networks at the level of previous university studies. Basic knowledge of water chemistry and technology.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Conditions for Course Completion

The course is based on consultations and independent study of relevant professional and scientific sources.

A semester project on an assigned topic must be completed and submitted before the oral examination. The semester project must demonstrate an appropriate professional level, correctness of the applied methodology, the ability to work with relevant professional sources, and the ability to address the assigned problem independently.

After submission, the semester project is evaluated. If deficiencies are identified, revision or correction may be required. The oral examination may be taken once the semester project has been accepted as satisfactory.

Oral Examination

The oral examination focuses on the subject matter of the course, topics related to the submitted semester project, and the ability to discuss the addressed issues independently at an appropriate professional level.

The oral examination assesses in particular:

  • the scope and correctness of professional knowledge,

  • understanding of the hydrological and hydraulic principles of urban drainage,

  • the ability to explain and professionally justify the methods applied and solutions proposed,

  • the ability to apply acquired knowledge to a specific professional problem,

  • the ability to work with relevant professional, technical and legislative sources.

Final Assessment

The course is assessed on a pass / fail basis.

A pass is awarded when both of the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • the semester project is assessed as satisfactory,

  • the oral examination demonstrates an appropriate level of professional knowledge, understanding of relevant relationships, and the ability to apply acquired knowledge.

If either of these conditions is not fulfilled, the final assessment is fail.

Aims

Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire advanced professional knowledge, skills and competences required for the independent solution of professional and research problems in the field of urban drainage and sewer systems.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

  • understand the hydrological and hydraulic principles of urban drainage,

  • know advanced principles of the design, assessment, operation and management of sewer systems,

  • be familiar with the reliability, construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of sewer networks,

  • be familiar with relevant technical standards, legislation and professional sources related to urban drainage,

  • understand the potential of hydroinformatics, computational and modelling tools for the analysis of sewer systems,

  • be familiar with current professional and research approaches in the field of urban drainage.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse the hydrological and hydraulic conditions of urban areas and assess their impact on the performance of sewer systems,

  • solve professional tasks related to the design, assessment, operation and rehabilitation of sewer systems,

  • select and apply appropriate analytical, computational and modelling methods,

  • critically evaluate professional and scientific sources and interpret their results,

  • formulate a professional or research problem, propose an appropriate approach to its solution and evaluate the obtained results,

  • professionally justify and defend the methods and conclusions of the semester project.

Competences

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • independently solve complex professional and research problems in the field of urban drainage,

  • critically assess the suitability of applied methods, models and proposed technical solutions,

  • integrate knowledge from hydrology, hydraulics, hydroinformatics and the technical design of sewer systems,

  • work independently with professional and scientific sources and further develop their knowledge in the field,

  • professionally discuss, interpret and defend the results of their own work and apply them to research and practical tasks.
