Aims
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with methods of protecting and conservation of architectural monuments and urban ensembles, and to equip them with the skills required for architectural design in environments with preserved and valuable architectural heritage. Students become familiar with methods of restoration and options for the preservation and adaptive reuse of cultural heritage sites. This knowledge and these skills are essential for architects, given the high proportion of construction activity that takes the form of interventions in existing structures, as well as the environmental, economic, ethical and aesthetic arguments in favour of preserving their value.Successful completion of the module enable students to:– gain a general understanding of issues relating to the architectural heritage conservation;– distinguish between heritage and other values of the preserved building stock and argue in favour of their preservation;– to link the knowledge of the history of architecture and building technology with practical issues relating to the maintenance and restoration of heritage buildings;– following relevant practical experience, to draw up a professional concept for an intervention in a historic building; and– to prepare the relevant implementation documentation for restoration and supervise its execution.
