Course detail
FA-VK1-NAcad. year: 2025/2026
In the first year we will focus on architectural drawing and its specific qualities, such as the convincing depiction of proportions, volume, and space. An integral part of the course consists of the fundamentals of perspective drawing and composition. We will practice drawing both geometric and organic forms from a model, studying architectural elements, modeling volumes with light and shadow, as well as techniques such as charcoal and red chalk drawing. The instruction combines traditional methods of academic drawing with contemporary approaches such as urban sketching and aims to develop the ability to convincingly represent student’s own architectural vision.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
To be awarded course credit, students are required to submit a collection of drawings from in-class exercises and homework assignments, which will be specified in writing on an ongoing basis. The grading includes both the quality of the submitted drawings and the student’s progress over the course of the semester, taking into account engagement, effort, and originality.
Students must attend the introductory lecture and are required to participate in the practical classes. Three absences per semester are tolerated. Excused absences and arrangements for more frequent absences due to serious reasons are possible by agreement with the instructor; alternatively, an absence may be made up by attending another group within the same week. A higher number of absences may affect the final evaluation.
Aims
The aim of the course is to acquire the fundamentals of architectural drawing and representational methods, which students can further develop in their subsequent studies and in architectural practice. Some exercises are intended to explore the possibilities of drawing media, to increase sensitivity, and to free the imagination, while others focus on cultivating and refining drawing expression and technique. Students will learn to engage in dialogue—to see and understand the results and potential of their own work and to respond to criticism.
