Design + Build: Architectural Transformation by Bridging Tradition and Innovation

The summer school explores the adaptive reuse of vacant rural buildings, heritage preservation, local crafts, and experimental interventions. Students will gain a hands-on experience at a half-timbered farmhouse in Prezier, Lower Saxony, Germany, and exchange their knowledge with experts, the local community, and students from across Europe.

In cooperation between Leibniz University Hannover, TU Vienna, and Brno University of Technology.

Aims

  • Understand traditional versus innovative preservation techniques
  • Attend lectures of local and international experts on the topic of transformation
  • Visit and explore the case studies of architectural transformation in the region
  • Explore tools and various materials employed for the preservation of a farmhouse
  • Design an intervention from the concept to the execution
  • Collaborate in an international design team 

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The summer school will consist of lectures, exercises, excursions, and design tasks. Students are expected to participate in all activities and contribute to the group work of the summer school.
