Geology

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of geology relevant to construction practice. It focuses on the formation, properties and identification of minerals and the main types of rocks, their use in construction, the use of geological maps, and the fundamentals of the regional geology of the Czech Republic, hydrogeology and foundation soil. The course includes practical identification of rocks and preparation of a semester project.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course is completed by receiving credit based on the defense of a semester project, supplemented by demonstrating the ability to independently describe rock material.

Aims

Professional Knowledge:

  • Students will become familiar with the main types of rocks forming the foundation soils of buildings, including natural processes that affect their quality over time. Students will also acquire professional knowledge concerning the use of geomaterials in construction. Students will also learn to work with geological maps and acquire basic knowledge of hydrogeology and the regional geology of the Czech Republic. Finally, students will learn how to systematically prepare a geological survey of foundation soil for construction purposes.

Professional Skills:

  • Students will be able to determine and describe the properties and behaviour of the main types of rocks forming foundation soils. They will learn to identify and classify endogenous and exogenous factors affecting the quality of foundation soil.

Professional Competence:

  • Students will gain practical experience with the behaviour and properties of rocks and soils in the field. They will learn to design and prepare foundation soil surveys for simple types of structures.

Study aids

The study materials consist of recommended literature, geological maps, geomaterial samples, and other study materials provided by the instructors as part of the course.

  • Úvod, stavba Země, vztah zemětřesení, tektoniky a vulkanismu, horninotvorný cyklus a rozdělení hornin.
  • Tmavé a světlé horninotvorné minerály, jejich geneze a poznávací znaky.
  • Vznik magmatických hornin, základní petrografické typy a jejich využití ve stavební praxi.
