Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Aims

Upon successfully completing the course, the student should be able to know and apply:

Basic principles of design. Design of basic concrete elements. Structural properties of concrete and concrete reinforcement, its interaction with concrete. Calculation assumptions for the behaviour of materials and structures. Durability of concrete structures. Design of reinforced concrete elements stressed by bending moment and shear force – ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states, design principles. Design of reinforced concrete elements stressed by a combination of axial force and bending moment. Design of elements made of plain and lightly reinforced concrete.

The education benefit will be the ability to design simple concrete elements – one-way slabs, beams, girders, lintels, cantilevers, columns and staircases, which are characterized by low material consumption.

Syllabus

  1. Elements of concrete structures. Components of concrete. Structural properties of concrete and influencing factors.
  2. Types of concrete and reinforcement and their interaction. Theory of concrete structures design – load, structural requirements, design assumptions, durability. Limit states – principle of design.
  3. Analysis of reinforced concrete bending members. Design of cross–sections for bending – general and simplified method.
  4. Design of cross–sections for bending – rectangular cross–sections, general cross–sections.
  5. Design of member for shearing force.
  6. Design of member for shearing force.
  7. Curtailment of reinforcement in beam – detailing and arrangements. Reinforcement of bended structural members – beams, lintels.
  8. Principles of design and reinforcement of staircases.
  9. Principles of design and reinforcement of simple elements – ring beams, cornices, balconies.
  10. Design of cross–sections subjected to axial load and bending.
  11. Design of cross–sections subjected to axial load and bending.
  12. Design of members from plain and lightly reinforced concrete.
  13. Principles of designing flexural elements according to serviceability limit states.

Syllabus

  1. The load and its determination, combination and effects. Idealisation of basic structural members. Design of monolithic reinforced concrete structure – project: Definition of the task, preliminary design of dimensions, analysis of structural solution and static system, scheme of shape of structure.
  2. Basic materials properties of reinforcement and concrete, interaction of concrete and reinforcement, durability of concrete members.
  3. Bended members, design of the one-way slabs: simple supported slab – load, effect of the load,design for bending and shear, transverse reinforcement, anchorage of reinforcement, reinforcement in the areas of partial fixation, scheme of reinforcement.
  4. Design of slabs: continuous slab – load, effect of the load and redistribution, load cases combinations, design for bending, scheme of reinforcement.
  5. Design of a T–beam – load, effect of the load, design for bending (T–section, comparison with a rectangular cross–section).
  6. General cross–section member subjected to bending.
  7. Correction.
  8. T–beam – shear design, shear between web and flanges, curtailment of reinforcement in beam.
  9. Design of a lintel - load, load cases combination, design for bending, shear, direct and indirect supporting of beam, scheme of reinforcement.
  10. Reinforcement of ring beams. Drawings of reinforcement of designed members.
  11. RC member subjected to bending and axial force – load, action of load, verification of load-bearing capacity via interactive diagram (computational example).
  12. Correction.
  13. Submit of the project. Credit.
