Forensic Ecotechnology

The subject focuses on the acquisition of professional knowledge and practical skills enabling the assessment of the physical state of trees using visual and instrument-based methods. Subsequently, students will be able to assess the operational safety of trees, evaluate their function and apply selected arboristic standards of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic. They will be able to carry out the individual steps in practice as part of a case study and interpret the results in the manner required in forensic investigations.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
Preparation and defence of a seminar paper – a case study – for a specific tree species in an urban area. It should be focused on the visual and biomechanical assessment of the condition of the tree and its operational safety, and on the valuation and function of the tree.

Aims
The study aims of the subject are the acquisition of selected and specialized knowledge for the systematic discovery and assessment of real objects of forensic relevance within the forest-tree-human system (the forest ecosystem, and particularly tree taxa) in a manner appropriate to the needs of forensic investigations.
Students will gain knowledge both via a multidisciplinary approach and via interdisciplinary blending (considering both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods) in the Czech legal environment.
