Computer modeling 2

The course is focused on numerical modeling and computer simulations of heat and mass transfer in buildings and elements of building energy systems. Students will learn the basics of CFD simulations and heat transfer simulations in buildings.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of physical laws in terms of heat and substance transfer. Basic knowledge of numerical methods. Knowledge of heating, ventilation and cooling systems of buildings. Knowledge of indoor climate of building theory and computer modeling I.

Aims

  • Professional Knowledge: The student understands the theoretical principles of transient heat transfer involving phase change materials (PCM), radiant indoor climate modeling, and the mathematical fundamentals of CFD fluid dynamics.
  • Professional Skills: The student can set up and execute CFD software simulations for laminar and turbulent flows, natural convection, and indoor thermal comfort.
  • Professional Competences: The student is qualified to critically evaluate and interpret numerical simulation results to design and optimize building services engineering concepts and indoor environmental quality.
