The course focuses on characteristic features of professional business communication. Students will be introduced to the LSP language in common economic and business contexts. The course develops students´general and business vocabulary as well as grammatical structures typical for business language. Stress is put not only on the development of communication skills, but also on the ability to use the acquired knowledge actively. 

The course is provided by the Institute of Informatics.

The course is intended for students of bachelor’s degree programs in the first year of study, in the second semester. Language of instruction: English.

Re-enrolment in a course after successful completion is not allowed.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of English at an intermediate level. A prerequisite for the course Professional English 3 (code OA3L) is registration for the course OA2Z (including fulfillment of attendance requirements). All students who registered for the course OA2Z in the winter semester of the relevant academic year (including those students who did not successfully complete the course OA2Z) must register for the follow-up course OA3L in the summer semester of the same academic year and complete it with a course credit and an examination. Students who registered for the course OA2Z in the winter semester of the relevant academic year but did not successfully complete it must re-register for the course OA2Z in the winter semester of the following academic year and also complete it with a course credit and an examination.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Course completion

Credit: Students will be awarded the credit upon collecting at least 25 points out of the total 50, as follows:

75% attendance in seminars (compulsory)

10 weekly e-learning assignments submitted before deadline - max. 10 points

A review of an academic article (150-300 words) of the student's own choice, assessment based on the use of correct grammar, stylistics and professional terminology - max. 5 points

A co-teaching activity on an assigned topic based on course literature - max. 5 points (compulsory), in-class registration

Final credit test - up to 30 points (compulsory)

Exam: up to 50 points

The exam takes the form of a group project and a presentation of this project. No later than Credit Week, students are divided into groups of 4, when they also choose the topic for their project. They then prepare a project proposal, which they submit in Moodle no later than 3 days before the exam. On the day of the exam, students present their projects in their groups. Students will receive more information about the project during the semester.

Assessment of the presentation reflects the use of:

1. correct grammar/pronunciation (max. 5 points),

2. use of academic language (max. 5 points)

3. preparation (max. 5 points),

4. organization (max. 5 points),

5. meeting assignment objectives (max. 5 points),

6. presentation style (max. 5 points),

7. visual aids (max. 5 points),

8. conclusion (max. 5 points),

9. overall team cohesiveness (max. 5 points)

10. overall rating of project (max. 5 points)

 

The final mark is awarded based on the total number of collected points from the credit part and the final presentation in line with the ECTS grading scale as follows: 100-90 (A), 89-80 (B), 79-70 (C), 69-60 (D), 59-50 (E), 49-0 (F).

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

The same conditions apply to students with an approved Individual Study Plan (ISP); the exception is mandatory attendance at seminars. Co-teaching activities may, by prior agreement with the instructor, be presented online.

Attendance is continuously monitored by the instructor.

Completion Based on International Certificate: instead of taking English Language B2, students may present one of the following internationally recognised certificates, completed within the last five years: CAE or CPE. Other certificates are not accepted.

Completion Based on an Exam at a Foreign University: a course completed within the Erasmus programme at a foreign university that corresponds in content and level to English Language B2 and includes a final exam may be recognised as equivalent.

Note on Plagiarism: All submitted work must be the result of the student’s own independent effort. AI-generated texts (e.g., produced by tools such as ChatGPT or similar systems) are not considered original student work and will not be accepted.

Aims

The course focuses on characteristic features of professional business communication. Students will be introduced to the LSP language in common economic and business contexts. Emphasis is put on spoken langauge.






At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- orientate themselves in English economic terminology relating to the covered topics,
- read and understand authentic professional texts at the upper-intermediate level,
- discuss covered economic topics,
- apply gained specialized terminology in simulations of negotiations and business meetings,
- apply specialized terminology in business correspondence.

Syllabus

Teaching Methods Description

Instruction is conducted in the form of seminars focused on the systematic development of students’ language competences in the areas of ICT English and Business English. Emphasis is placed on the development of communication and presentation skills, work with professional texts and listening materials, active use of specialised vocabulary, and teamwork. The course directly follows Professional English 2 and aims at achieving B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

  • Introduction to Professional English 3; revision and extension of language structures from Professional English 2

  • ICT-related vocabulary (information systems, software, hardware, digital technologies)

  • Business English topics – corporate environment, management, projects, innovation

  • Work with professional texts (reading comprehension, text analysis, terminology)

  • Listening comprehension focused on ICT and business-related topics

  • Development of communication skills – discussions, guided speaking activities, teamwork

  • Presentation skills in a professional context (structure of presentations, presentation language, delivery)
