Communication In Management

The course aims on relevant knowledge of interpersonal communication necessary for efficient managerial positions. Students will be familiarized with theoretical models of interpersonal communication and consequently emphased on practice and application of acquired knowledge in specific situations, when solving case studies or mutual discussions.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Criteria for successful completion of the course:
Overall assessment and successful completion of the course consists of:
• 20b individual assignment 
• 25b assignments´presentation and answers in the discussion
• 15b activities in seminars
• 40b final written exam.
To successfully complete the course, it is necessary to prepare an  individual assignment, present it and answer questions in the following discussion. The individual assignment is written and must meet the specified content and formal requirements. Topics for processing are selected and approved by the teacher at the beginning of the semester. The point assessment from the seminar is transferred to the exam and the final assessment includes performance during the seminar and the exam.

Students with ISP prepare an individual assignment that they request no later than by the end of the 2nd week of the semester.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with relevant knowledge and skills related to social communication as a key tool for effective leadership. Main attention is paid to managerial competencies developement.
Students will acquire relevant psychological knowledge from the field of social competence of manager. They will master especially the following skills: identification of communication goals, active listening, exoteric formulation of requirements and opinions, analysis of communication problems, choice of relevant communication strategy and tactics and their successful application, prevention of misunderstanding as well as increasing of individual, team and organizational performance by means of creative communication.

1. Introduction to the subject: the importance of interpersonal communication for the work of a manager. Concept of the course, its basic topics and their connections. 
2. Definition of the process of interpersonal communication and the importance of communication competence for managerial practice.
3. Models of the communication process and their effective application in management practice.
3. Self-assessment as an effective tool for effective managerial communication.
4. Principles of a personal development plan based on an individualized competency model.
5. Princples of social perception and their consequences for knowing oneself and others. Application of the laws of social perception in management practice.
6. Principles of effective verbal communication in management practice. Effective overcoming of barriers in verbal communication. Active listening as an integral part of effective communication. Specifics and principles of correct conversation management. Principles of successful presentation and its practice.
7. Effective nonverbal communication. Forms of nonverbal communication and their effective application in managerial practice.
8. Basics of theoretical models of social communication (assertiveness and transactional analysis) and possibilities of their application in increasing the effectiveness of social communication.
9. Principles of stress management.
10. Coping strategies.
11. Principles of a personal development plan.
12. Effective communication in an international environment.
13. Final summary of the acquired knowledge and evaluation of the acquired skills and experience.
