Business Intelligence in the Company

The course provides an overview of the principles and approaches to Business Intelligence (BI) solutions and the possibilities of their use in business management. It thus creates the prerequisites for performing the functions of analysts and consultants of applications designed to support decision-making in a business. The practical part of the course uses the MS SQL Server environment and its integrated BI functions, including Power BI.

Entry knowledge

Entry requirements for students are based on the level of knowledge of MS OFFICE (Excel, knowledge of the basics of SQL and PowerPivot is an advantage).

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Completion of the course
Conditions for credit:
The student must obtain at least 50% of the possible maximum points during the semester, i.e. 15 points out of 30.
If plagiarism or unauthorized cooperation on projects or in the mid-term test is revealed, credit will not be granted and disciplinary proceedings may be considered.
Mid-term test - by completing a practical task according to the assignment. There is no make-up date. (9 points). Participation in the mid-term test is mandatory, to successfully obtain credit, it is necessary to obtain at least 3 points from this test.
Project preparation - one project according to the assignment with relevant documentation. Students are introduced to the assignment in the second lecture. (21 points). During the semester, it is possible to obtain plus points in the exercises, which are counted towards the mid-term test.

Examination conditions:
Final exam - combined, in the form of a practical test and, if necessary, an oral examination. (60 points for the written part of the exam, to successfully pass the exam, the written part of the exam must be completed in such a way that it is evaluated at least 30 points, otherwise the exam will be evaluated 0 points with an F grade.)

Completion of the course for students with individual study
Conditions for credit:
Project development - one project according to the assignment with the relevant documentation. Students are introduced to the assignment in the second lecture.
Conditions for the exam:
Final exam - combined, in the form of a practical test and, if necessary, an oral examination. (60 points for the written part of the exam, to successfully pass the exam, the written part of the exam must be prepared in such a way that it is evaluated at least 30 points, otherwise the exam will be evaluated 0 points with an F grade.)

Completion of the course in distance learning (applies only when objective external circumstances do not allow the study program to be implemented in accordance with the granted accreditation):
To be specified according to the current epidemiological situation.

Attendance at lectures and exercises is not mandatory.

Exercises with computer support are focused on teaching integration, analytical and predictive functions and tools of MS SQL Server, as well as PowerPivot and Power BI. During the semester, a mid-term test is written for a maximum of 40 points. There is no make-up date for this semester test. If a student has a duly documented and excused absence from the exercise where the mid-term exam is written, he or she can register for a replacement date.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic principles of Business Intelligence (BI), development in BI, position in IS/ICT architecture, implementation of BI tasks and acquisition of practical skills with analytical parts of BI.
Students will be able to design and realistically implement a complete BI solution (multidimensional analyses, multidimensional cubes, including preparation of client applications).
