Architectural Heritage Conservation

The course introduces conservation of cultural, namely architectural heritage in the broadest context. It presents the history of conservation movement, current situation in the world and the Czech Republic, conservation institutions and legislation, doctrinal conventions and recommendations, ethics of heritage conservation, typology of architectural heritage focusing on Central European environment, methods of research and renovation of architectural heritage, and selected technical aspects of maintenance and renovation.

Aims
Successful completion of the course will enable the students to:
- have general overview of architectural heritage care;
- identify heritage and other values of the inherited stock of buildings and to give arguments why they should be conserved;
- interconnect the knowledge from the history of architecture and construction technology with practical questions of maintenance and renovation of monuments;
- design professional concept of intervention into a historic development after some time of practice;
- develop an adequate working documentation for a renovation project and to supervise its completion.
