Numerical problems in Physics 1

FEKT-BPC-FY1PAcad. year: 2023/2024

The course first covers the basics of particle mechanics, which are then used to investigate the effects of forces acting on particles in physical fields. A substantial part of the course is devoted to electric and magnetic fields, their origin, laws and common ground leading to the concept of electromagnetic fields and Maxwell's equations.

Entry knowledge

A student entering this course should at the high school level:

- have knowledge of the basic concepts and laws of mechanics, electricity and magnetism,

- be able to explain the basic concepts and laws of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and be able to express in their own words the areas of their application,

- be able to apply the basic laws of mechanics to the simple motion of a particle, apply the laws of electricity and magnetism to simple electrical circuits.

Mathematical apparatus:

Upon entering this course, the student should be able to discuss the basic concepts of high school algebra and geometry, calculate linear equations, and apply basic goniometric functions.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course ends with a credit.

A condition for obtaining the credit is participation in 75% of the exercises and passing the final multiple-choice test with score of at least 50% .

Presence on all exercises is mandatory. The method of checking the student's presence is determined by the annually updated decree of the course guarantor. Maximum tolerance of absence is 25%.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with an extension of the understanding they gain in Physics 1 (BPC-FY1), i.e. a clear and logical interpretation of the basic physical concepts and laws of mechanics, electricity and magnetism. Reinforce understanding of these concepts and laws through a wide range of interesting applications.

The graduate of the course will be able to describe in his/her own words how the Physics 1 course enhances high school knowledge. The graduate of the course is able to:

- explain the basic concepts and laws of mechanics, electricity, and magnetism,

- apply the basic laws of mechanics to the simple motion of a particle,

- apply the laws of electricity and magnetism to calculations in electromagnetism.
