Metal Structures 1 (EVB)

The course is focused on theoretical principles of the behaviour of members and connections of load-carrying metal structures and basic design cases, including practical applications to particular cases and their understanding by students:
Material and selection of structural members.
Principles and rules of reliability approach in steel structures, allowable and ultimate limit state design methods. Probabilistic approach in steel structures.
Geometric and static characteristics of open and closed cross-sections of thin-walled steel members.
Connections of metal structures – principles of structural design (bolted, frictional and welded connections).
Tensile members. Bending – elastic and plastic action.
Simple and warping torsion of thin-walled open and closed cross-section members.
Stability and buckling resistance of compression members of solid and composed section.
Lateral buckling.
Members subject to tension and bending, compression and bending stress.

Syllabus
1. Introduction to the problems of the design and realization of load-carrying metal structures. Advantages and disadvantages of metal structures, state and perspectives of the development of the field. Material and assortment of metal structural members.
2. Principles and bases of design of metal structures, limit state method, permissible stresses method. Probability approaches for the design of steel structures. Classification of metal structures cross-sections.
3. Bolt connections - types of bolt connections, basic cases of bolt connections stressing, approaches and procedures for the design of bolt connections.
4. Welded connections - types of welded connections, fillet welds, butt welds, basic cases of welded connections stressing, approaches and procedures for the design of welded connections.
5. Basic cases of the metal structures members stressing - tension, compression, bending, shear, elastic and elastoplastic behaviour. Pure and warping torsion of thin-walled members with open and hollow cross-section.
6. Buckling of compression members - general principle of the stability lost in the case of compression, ideal and actual (real) member, general approaches for the design of the buckling of compression member, procedures for the design of compression members in buckling.
7. Built-up structural members - principle of built-up members, principles of the behaviour of built-up members in the case of stability lost in compression buckling, procedures for the design of built-up compression members in buckling.
8. Lateral-torsional buckling of bending members (buckling of beams) - principles of the stability lost of bending members in lateral-torsional buckling, general approaches to the design of beams in lateral-torsional buckling, the procedures for the design of the beam in lateral-torsional buckling.
9. Combination of effects - bi-axial bending, interaction of tension and bending, compression and bending, influence of shear on the resistence in compression (tension) and bending. Principles of the behaviour in combinations of effects, design approaches in the case of combination of effects, design procedures.
10. Steel structures of hall buildings - types of hall buildings with steel load-carrying structure (industrial, agriculture, sport, exhibition halls, etc.), principles of the disposition and composition arrangement, main structural members and parts of load-carrying structure, principles of their static behaviour, structural design and detailing.
11. Steel atructures of multi-storey buildings - types of multi-storey buildings with steel load-carrying structure, principles of the disposition and composition arrangement, main structural members and parts of load-carrying structure, principles of their static behaviour, structural design and detailing.
12. Steel structures of large spans roofing - types of roofing (grids and spatial grids, suspension and cable-stayed structures), principles of composition arrangement, principles of static behaviour, structural design and detailing.
13. Technology of production and realization of metal structures. Errection of metal structures, maintenance, reconstruction and strengthening of metal structures.

4. Bolt friction connections (resistant to slip) subjected to shear, tension and their combination - basic cases and principles of the behaviour.
5. Welded connections - fillet welds.
6. Welded connections - fillet welds (continuation), butt welds.
7. Basic cases of the metal structural members stressing - tension, compression, bending, shear.
8. Metal structural members subjected to bending - elastic and elastoplastic behaviour. Combination of effects.
9. Torsion and warping torsion of metal structural members with open and hollow cross-section.
10. Buckling of compression members - flexural buckling.
11. Buckling of compression members - torsional and torsional-flexural buckling.
12. Buckling of compression built-up members.
