Knowledge of general education is required, on the basis of which the student has passed the admission procedure.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean’s Regulation on the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. It is necessary to give a written form of seminar work on an individually chosen theme from the area of jazz and rock music. Up to 100 points are given for the final oral examination and it is necessary to earn at least 50 points for its successful completion.
Forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected chapters from the history of popular music (musical folklore issues, especially in our country and neighboring countries, its social functions - traditional popular music from antiquity to the 19th century, popular music theater - the origin of operetta and social dance of 19st Century and others.
The student will be able to:
- name and characterize the beginnings of popular music: the types and the application of musical folklore and the characteristics of traditional popular music,
- name and characterize the development of popular music theater and its social function,
- name and characterize social dances and their functions in the 19th century in Europe and Latin American dances,
- define the genre of popular music genres,
- explain the musical nature of the genres of popular music and their social functions.
